Body Dysmorphia

A project about body dysmorphia and the anxiety that comes with it. I used Photoshop to distort scale and show how we can feel compared to how we look, then finished with a set of plaster castings of my own hands.

How we feel, and how we look

This project is about body dysmorphia and the anxiety that comes with it. I taught myself Photoshop and used scale to show the gap between how we feel and how we actually look in the mirror, using everyday objects as stand-ins.

I also shot a series with props that made one part of my body abnormally larger than the rest, to convey how unrealistic the condition makes your own body feel. The aim was to show how serious this state of mind is.

Hand castings

The final piece of the project. When I feel anxious or uncomfortable, I tap each finger in turn against my little finger to calm and distract myself. I cast my hands in plaster mid-gesture, to record a coping mechanism that is raw and difficult, but real.

I love this kind of work because it feels authentic. Every line and texture in the plaster adds depth and grit.
